Piston rings perform four functions: sealing combustion gases, controlling oil lubrication, transferring heat for cooling, and supporting the piston within the cylinder. They minimize gas leakage to the crankcase, scrape excess oil from the cylinder wall while maintaining a lubricating film, conduct heat from the piston to the cylinder liner, and prevent direct contact between the piston and cylinder wall.
